Eminem at Voodoo Festival Part 2 (Videos)

Eminem at Voodoo Festival

Eminem returns to spotlight with Voodoo Fest concert

NEW ORLEANS — He's baaack

Rapper Eminem emerged from a half-decade hiatus Friday night, bounding onstage at the Voodoo Art and Music Experience here to several thousand cheering fans.

With a gigantic screen behind him showing scenes from a horror movie starring himself, Eminem, whose real name is Marshall Mathers, kicked off the evening set with 3 A.M., a song from this year's album, Relapse. Eminem, 37, was a headliner at the three-day, five-stage music festival this weekend that also features Jane's Addiction, Flaming Lips, Lenny Kravitz and KISS.

Friday's crowd roared with approval as Eminem rekindled past hits, such as Business and Square Dance, in his signature rapid-fire rap. A full rock band accompanied him on stage, all members dressed in skeleton outfits.

"Hey New Orleans, I'm back y'all. Did you miss me?" he said to an eruption of cheers. "I missed you, too."

Eminem has kept a reclusive, non-touring life the past several years, as he battled an addiction to prescription painkillers. Friday marked his first concert in five years and his only live performance of the year. There's a history here: Eminem played the festival, known locally as Voodoo Fest, in 2000, just as his first album, The Slim Shady LP, was catapulting him to stardom, said Steve Rehage, a New Orleans native who founded Voodoo Fest in 1999.

Voodoo organizers reached out to Eminem again this year and were surprised when he readily agreed to perform. "It was a really fast, quick and easy negotiation," Rehage said.

Concertgoers on Friday endured heavy rains and dropping temperatures as storms passed over the outdoor festival earlier in the evening. But soggy spectators lined up by the thousands to see Eminem's 75-minute show.

"Everything I expected," said Ian Robert, 22, of New Orleans, under a soaked poncho. "It was definitely worth standing in the rain and the cold.

Eminem toggled between recent creations, such as We Made You, and older favorites, such as Kill You, Cleaning Out My Closet, Superman and The Real Slim Shady. Lighters came out when he performed Stan, the ballad-like song that uses a sample from singer Dido and describes a stalking fan. And a sea of arms waved back and forth as he spat out Like Toy Soldiers.

Midway through the show, Eminem brought out D12, the Detroit rappers collective he's associated with, rapping to hits with them such as My Band and Purple Pills.

Eminem hinted at his newfound sobriety while joking with members of D12 onstage, reminiscing about taking drugs in Amsterdam. "Remember when I used to get (high)?" he said. He then led into Under the Influence, a whimsical rap about popping pills and performing while high.

Eminem's reach was evident Friday night, as teen spectators mingled with older fans, many of whom knew the words to each song. Eva SantaCruz, 43, said she began listening to Eminem after borrowing one of his CDs from her teenage daughter. She drove more than six hours Friday morning from Little Rock, to catch the show, she said.

"He's awesome," SantaCruz said. "There's no way I was going to miss this."

Many fans wandered away toward the end of his show but rushed back for the encore: Lose Yourself, the Academy-Award-winning song that was part of the 8 Mile soundtrack.

"Better than I expected," said Cami Munson, 19, of New Iberia, La. "It's good to have him back."

Eminem “In Talks” For Horror Movie Series, Says Publicist

Earlier today (October 28) reports hit the ’Net that Eminem was prepping the release of a series of horror films titled Shady Talez.

Gore fans read on shocktillyoudrop.com that the Detroit MC had plans to develop an anthology of flicks paying homage to some of the genre’s cult favorites, like Christine, Aliens and The Lost Boys. According to the site, Em would even have multiple acting roles in the project.

XXLMag.com spoke to the rap superstar’s publicist, Dennis Dennehy, who said nothing is set in stone thus far. “There’s been talks,” he said, “but [I] can’t confirm anything yet.”

Em is set to release Relapse 2 by the end of the year.

Just Blaze Confirms Eminem Relapse 2 Production, I've Been Quietly Going Back & Forth

Producer Just Blaze has confirmed that he will be working on Eminem's upcoming Relapse 2 album and said he is aiming to put together nearly a dozen tracks for the rapper.

While keeping details to a minimum, Just Bleezy also said he has been working with Slim Shady for over the past two months.

"Only thing that I'm gonna get into right now, now that he put it out there, I am working with Eminem on his new album, we are working on Relapse 2," Blaze confirmed in an interview. "As of yesterday, he's done about six, seven records. I go back in a few weeks and do three or four more maybe. I've been quietly going back and forth to New York and Detroit for the past two months just getting a feel for it, and getting a feel for each other because he hasn't worked with too many people outside of his camp. We got a good relationship so the records are coming." (Distortion 2 Static)

Em recently broke the news of his album featuring Just Blaze's signature sound earlier this month.

"[I'm] pretty much finished as far as recording," Eminem revealed. "I think all that's left to do is mix. And you know, in the mixing process, if I come up with anything else then [it will be on there.] I think it's gonna be a lot different, a lot different than what people expect as far as the contrast from the last record to this one, I think I went back...I got a couple of tracks with Mr. Porter, I got two tracks on the album with him so far, four, possibly five with Just Blaze and I think the overall basis of the record is -- it's more emotional driven. Like the last record, I was more concentrated on spitting, but with this record, I feel like there's some of that, but at the same time I went back to making songs with feels to them as opposed to just rap records...I'm putting everything I got into this next record. All my focus, just everything, I just want to finish that project and I'll take it from there." (Toca Tuesdays)

He previously spoke with DJ Whoo Kid about collaborations on the project with artists including 50 Cent.

"Me and Fif did a couple of records, couple of months ago in Vegas, one song for my record and another for his," Em revealed in an interview last weekend. "We just wanted to like, I just had an idea to like 'Yo, why don't we do something we ain't done yet.' And kinda go back and forth, we've kinda done it on other records but not to the extent of what we're doing on this one...The way that it's going now, K'Naan has two [produced] tracks on the record and Just Blaze has four, possibly five...I definitely feel like I'm in a little different space right now. I don't know, with the last record, it felt like a lot of it had to do with me being sober...With Relapse 1 -- a lot of that album, I wanted to rap at fire and do punchlines." (Shade 45)

Whoo Kid recently spoke about what rap heads should anticipate from Relapse 2 and promised a return of the "old" Slim Shady.

"What I really laughed at was the Mariah Carey [diss record]," Whoo Kid said in an interview. "That was funny. But that's nothing compared to Relapse 2. What I heard, that's just 2 percent [of the intensity]. Eminem from back in the day has returned. The crazy, lyrical, maniacal Eminem is back. Maniac! He was maniacal, but that was like, 'Let me come back now. Let me get my sh*t situated. Who I gotta go at? Let me see what's going on. Let me get comfortable.' Now that he's comfortable, now he's gonna be like [a monster] in Relapse 2. Good luck, people." (MTV)

Madonna: ‘Eminem Turned Me Down For A Collabo’

Madonna landed the cover of the new Rolling Stone this week, and aside from talking about her long career in music, her love life, and her approval of Lady Gaga, she also mentions a hip-hop artist who would not work with her.

According to the "Material Girl," she had previously reached out to Eminem for a collabo, and guess what? Em turned her down.

"I wanted to work with Eminem. I don't think he wanted to work with me. Maybe he's shy," the music icon said.

While this isn't all that shocking, it's unclear when this attempt to work with hip-hop's great white hype went down.
